Meet Mr. White

Welcome. This portfolio has been created to enlighten you to the various ways I, Colin White can contribute to your organization. I received my Masters in Radio and Television from San Francisco State's BECA Department in December 2008 and I believe the experience and skills I gained in the program have prepared me to be a key component of an audio production facility. As an active member of the department I completed extensive production work in both the recording and sound design areas (see the "Wat's Sound" and Proximity" posts for examples of my sound design work). I also taught several audio courses.

In addition to my involvement in the University, I worked for Ben Manilla Productions as the producer of the House of Blues Radio Hour with Dan Aykroyd. Please take a look at the "House of Blues Radio Hour" post below for a more detailed description of my role at Ben Manilla Productions and to listen to some of the work I completed there.

Prior to my work with Ben Manilla, I was an assistant producer and head audio engineer for the award winning podcast, "No One's Listening". I recorded, edited, and posted our weekly three part podcast. The show was a combination of in-studio and phone-in interviews, audio quizzes, and general on-air banter regarding various aspects of media literacy.

My entrance to the world of sound took place in 2000 when I procured my first set of turntables. I have been a working DJ in San Francisco under the moniker Mr. White since 2003 and have played at venues such as Club 6, 111 Minna, Madrone Lounge, The Matrix Fillmore, and Double Dutch, among others. For me, the best part of being a DJ is getting people enthused about music they may be closed off to otherwise. I lure them in with sounds they are comfortable with and then throw new stuff at them once they're hooked.

Finally, I'm attaching a copy of my resume for a more concise look at my experience. Please contact me at colincameronwhite@gmail.com if there is any more information I can provide for you.

House of Blues Radio Hour

From August 2007 until March 2008 I worked as an intern and then as a full-time producer for Ben Manilla Productions. During this time I worked on the "House of Blues Radio Hour", an award winning, weekly radio program broadcast internationally on over 200 radio stations. Among my duties as producer, I programmed episodes, directed recording sessions with host Dan Aykroyd, wrote and edited scripts, scheduled and conducted guest interviews, and served as main contact with record labels, distributors, and affiliates.

In this post I would like to display two pieces I produced and edited for the House of Blues.

First, I would like to present the first segment of a tribute show we did shortly after the passing of Ike Turner. In it, we discussed Turner's legacy and musical contributions, compiled clips from interviews we had conducted with him, and played some of his music. I have included the original version that aired and an edited version with the songs and spots cut down for time.

Additionally, I have an example of a "House of Blues Break". These are shorter (5-6 minutes) segments that air Monday through Friday which highlight a single song or artist. In this particular Break we discussed the relationship between the Everly Brother's version of the song “Gone, Gone, Gone”, and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss’ cover of the tune for their 2007 album “Raising Sand”. Again, I have provided both the original and an edited version of the piece.
Thanks for listening.

Proximity

Last summer an old roommate and I decided to create a new fragrance in honor of his most effective efforts to attract members of the opposite sex. His basic strategy is to do nothing other than happen to be in their general area. More often than not, the less he speaks, or even acknowledges their presence, the better off he is. As long as he happens to be in close... Proximity. Below is the commercial we created as part of the advertising campaign for Proximity. I put together the video (not necessarily my strong suit) and produced the audio for the spot. Also, keep an eye out for my performance as a lucky body double.

Wat's Pig

Two years back two classmates (Rob Carballar and Dunning Butler) and I sound designed the opening three minutes from Peter Lord's Oscar nominated animated short Wat's Pig. We started with nothing but silence and recorded, edited, and mixed everything you hear.
This Summer I changed some edits and remixed the piece. Hope you like it...

Wedding Jams

A little while back I made one of the wiser decisions of my life and married the fabulous Charlene Hannibal. As is too often the case when we throw a party, she took it upon herself to do most of the work preparing the event and left me to worry about the music. As a favor for our guests I created a mix of what were deemed Wedding Jams and it ended up being one of my favorite DJ mixes.

Here is the write up we gave our guests to go with the CD:

We would like to offer this collection of music as our way of thanking everyone involved in helping us celebrate the beginning of our marriage. Some of the songs on this disc tell part of the story of how we got to where we are today while some are by artists we couldn’t imagine excluding from a mix that came from us. Other tracks are just great songs about love and lovin’ and one song is on here because someone once decided you can’t make a wedding mix without a song called Celebrate.

We hope you all enjoy the music.
